Have you ever thought about what it means to be created in God’s image?
Genesis 1:26-28 (NASB) 26 Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
What is the image of God? Here are some things that I see from just the first several chapters of Genesis. • God blesses others • God gives commands • God gives gifts • God rests • God has a green thumb • God seeks the good of others • God cares for others • God disciplines wrongdoing • God expresses sadness over the sins of people • God can be deeply troubled and grieved • God is gracious • God is a provider • God is creative • God is powerful • When God speaks, things happen
If this is God’s image & we have God’s image, then we have these qualities/abilities to some extent. We need to see ourselves as individuals who have great qualities and abilities BECAUSE we have been made by God in His image. We should not think of ourselves more highly than we ought (Romans 12:3), but with sober judgement we should not think of ourselves lowlier than we ought either.
We each need to have the self-image of one who is made in God’s image!
